ABOUT
BRIAN PRATHER is a designer of visual environments - sculpting space and material to create a unique setting for telling stories and sharing experiences. With over one hundred productions to his credit, Brian has designed for venues both familiar and unexpected, creating experiences at times sweeping and in moments intimate.
Design begins and ends in service to the story: it is a responsibility to respect both the voice of story tellers as well as the awareness of story listeners. Design is about creating a space to bring the two together and inviting them to share that space for the most human of experiences. Design is understanding and active engagement.
Brian has spent the better part of two decades designing Off-Broadway and in some of the larger regional theatres in the country, including the Alley Theatre, Asolo Rep, Goodspeed Musicals, Barrington Stage, Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey, Virginia Repertory Theatre, The Barter Theatre, and many more. He’s been awarded the Joseph Jefferson Award for Set Design in Chicago, and two Berkshire Theatre Critics Awards for his work at Barrington Stage in Massachusetts. Internationally, Brian designed the premiere of the new musical Minyeo-neun Goerowo in Seoul, South Korea, based on the popular Korean film.
Brian has also designed a variety of other projects, including the nationally broadcast PBS music performance series “The Kate”, for which he was nominated for a regional Emmy Award. He designed the recent national tour of A Night With Janis Joplin as seen on Broadway HD, and he’s designed several concerts for the band The Black Lillies.
Education is also a major component of Brian’s career, having headed the design concentration at Alvernia University after several years teaching Scenic Design at Ithaca College. Brian has also been an adjunct or visiting artist at The University of Connecticut, The University at Albany, NYU, the Yale Dramat, Emerson College and others.
Brian is currently the Resident Designer and Design Coordinator for TheaterWorks Hartford, where he has designed for over a decade. He is also an Associate Artist at Barrington Stage Co., and a proud member of United Scenic Artists Local 829 - supporting the work of designers and scenic artists.
Feeling equally at home with projects both live and filmed, traditional and experimental, favorite stories and stories yet to be written, Brian is always excited for new collaborations and is actively committed to participating in and promoting teams of diverse artists who each bring with them their unique backgrounds and valuable perspectives.
